About Code Red
Originally started as a short-term drive in May 2020, Code Red Initiative formed in response to the heightened inaccessibility to sanitary products within vulnerable communities during the start of the Covid19 pandemic.
However, with period inequality being an ongoing issue that requires long-term solutions, we decided to identify feasible alternatives to disposable hygiene products that are better for people and the environment. Code Red Initiative therefore aims to address period inequality in nearby vulnerable communities by providing those who menstruate with reusable sanitary products to reduce challenges associated with menstruation while encouraging community empowerment.
With poverty, gender inequality and stigma influencing access to hygiene products, menstrual health often goes unmet in South Africa. In turn, this tends to impact the quality of education, ability to earn income and both mental and physical health of girls and women. We hope to diminish feelings of hopelessness and despair often associated with accessing sanitary products by providing girls and women in Masiphumelele, Ocean View and Red Hill with reusable pads made by women within their own community. By supplying those who need with safe and sustainable alternatives to sanitary products, we can help reduce period inequality in South Africa one girl at a time.
Vocap further supports the Code Red Initiative by donating 10% of profits of any burgundy, maroon or pink Vocap headwear item sold.
